Biopic about Italian actor Alberto Sordi, from his beginnings 1937 to celebrity in 1957.

Starting from the end of the Second World War and for over forty years, the history of Albania was inextricably entwined with that of a single man. Enver Hoxha guided the country through ephemeral alliances and radical breaks with the status quo, driving him to adopt total isolation. A State Film shows us the forty-year-long Communist regime in Albania through material that the state produced to promote itself. Drawing entirely on often never-before-released archive footage – official propaganda films, footage from the regime’s private or reserved holdings – this film weds images and sound to portray a regime that used cinema as a tool of power. Just what do these same images tell us today?

Mondo pioneer Franco Prosperi proved himself a more than capable director of narrative cinema with this intriguing suspense feature. Robert Webber stars as Clint Harris, a morose, high-paid New York hit-man sent on assignment to Paris to locate and eliminate the mysterious Frank Secchy, who`s making a move on Manhattan`s criminal underworld and was also responsible for the murder of Clint`s brother. Compelled by his boss (Cec Linder, the original Felix Leiter from Goldfinger) to take along deadweight sidekick Tony Lo Bello (a very young looking Franco Nero), Clint runs into trouble with a heroin-addicted woman who holds the key to Secchy`s whereabouts. There`s lots of shooting, some great Big Apple location footage for the first couple of reels, a fine score by Robby Poiteven, a twist ending, and even a night club scene where Take A Heart, the great freakbeat anthem by The Sorrows, plays out in its entirety. The film is decent in a washed-out, pan and scan print, so I imagine it would look great on disc. Here`s hoping.

A tale of thwarted love and mistaken and assumed identities, this comedy revolves around an ordinary man becoming ‘King for a Day’. Cavaliere di Belfiore has, to distract attention from the genuine monarch, assumed the identity of King Stanislas of Poland, and arrived with much pomp at the castle of Baron Kelbar near Brest. There he finds himself in the middle of preparations for two weddings: the baron's daughter Giulietta is, most unwillingly, to marry the elderly La Rocca, while a local military official is hoping for the hand of the Marchesa del Poggio. Can ‘King Stanislas’ use his regal power in time to disentangle these unhappy betrothals before his true identity is revealed?
